BDA systems
What a BDA system costs, part by part
There is no public price list for BDA systems. The cost depends on your building and on what your fire department requires. This page breaks down where the money goes, so you can read a quote line by line.
Why no one can quote you a price over the phone
A BDA system is sized to your building's construction, its height and basements, the distance to the nearest public safety tower, and the radio bands your fire department uses. Your fire code official sets the technical criteria, including the frequencies and radio sites (IFC 2021 510.4.2.2). Until someone has measured the signal in your building, any number is a guess.
The one public price point we could verify comes from Fort Lauderdale, where the city cited 69 of its 484 high-rises for weak radio signals. News coverage reported that a booster system "can cost $250,000 or more", and a $275,000 figure was cited for one Galt Ocean Drive condo tower (Sun Sentinel via Firehouse, November 2025). Those are high-rise figures from one city. A smaller building, or one that only needs coverage in a garage or stairwell, will be in a different range.
Budgeting as a building manager
BDACheck, our sister site for building managers, keeps a BDA cost guide with the permit, acceptance test and re-inspection fees Florida fire departments publish, and what a system costs to keep in service each year.
Where the money goes
Use this table to read a quote. Every row is something a code or fire department requires, so a quote that leaves it out is not cheaper; it is incomplete.
| Cost item | Why it is required | Example source |
|---|---|---|
| Pre-installation signal survey | Shows whether the building needs a system at all, and where | Houston CE-1350 (test before any BDA); IFC 2021 510.1 |
| Engineering and design documents | Fire code official may require as-built design documents; some cities require a licensed engineer's seal | IFC 2021 510.4.2.7; Houston CE-1350 (Texas PE seal) |
| Listed amplifiers and remote units | Equipment must be listed to UL 2524 and FCC certified for public safety use | IFC 2021 510.4, 510.4.2.4 item 3 |
| Donor antenna and roof work | Permanently fixed and weather-protected per the building code | IFC 2021 510.5.1 |
| Indoor antennas and cable | Enough antenna density to cover 95% of each floor and 99% of critical areas | IFC 2021 510.4.1, 510.4.2.8 |
| Fire-rated cable pathway | Some cities require 2-hour fire-rated cable or enclosures and conduit | Palo Alto 510.4.1.5; SFFD AB 2.01 Addendum G, II.M |
| Standby batteries | At least 12 hours at full capacity in the model code; 24 hours in Palo Alto and Los Angeles | IFC 2021 510.4.2.3; Palo Alto 510.4.2.3; LAFD Requirement #105 |
| Fire alarm monitoring and annunciator | Supervisory signals at a listed fire alarm control unit or dedicated panel | IFC 2021 510.4.2.5; SFFD AB 2.01 Addendum G, II.J |
| Rated equipment room | San Francisco requires the BDA and UPS in a 2-hour rated room or a NEMA-4 rooftop enclosure | SFFD AB 2.01 Addendum G, II.G |
| Permits and plan review | A construction permit is required to install or modify a system | IFC 2021 510.3 |
| Acceptance test | Grid test on every floor after installation; some cities require an independent third party | IFC 2021 510.5.4; Palo Alto 510.5.3 item 8 |
Costs after installation
The system is not a one-time purchase. Budget for:
- Annual inspection and testing, plus a test after any structural change that could affect coverage (IFC 2021 510.6.1). See BDA testing.
- Frequency changes. If the FCC or the radio licensing authority changes or adds frequencies, the owner must modify or expand the system at the owner's expense (IFC 2021 510.6.2).
- Repairs on a deadline. Los Angeles, for example, requires a technician's evaluation within 24 hours of a service-affecting failure and repairs within five working days (LAFD Requirement #105).
How to get a real number
Ask each installer for a written quote that names every item in the table above, states which items are excluded, and includes the acceptance test. If you want firms to bid, request up to 3 quotes. Your request goes to up to 3 vetted installers who serve your area. We send no texts and make no cold calls.
For the owner's whole-budget view, including testing years and how condo associations plan for it, read ERRCS cost for owners.
Confirm requirements with your fire marshal (AHJ) before you sign a contract.
Questions people ask
How much does a BDA system cost?
We have not found a published price survey. The one figure we could verify is from news reporting on Fort Lauderdale high-rises, which said systems "can cost $250,000 or more", while a $275,000 figure was cited for one Galt Ocean Drive condo tower (Sun Sentinel via Firehouse, November 2025). Treat that as one data point for large high-rises, not a typical price. Get written quotes for your building.
Why do two quotes for the same building differ so much?
Usually because they assume different scope. One may include the fire-rated cable pathway, monitoring panel, fire alarm work, permit fees and acceptance test, and the other may not. Compare quotes line by line against the parts listed on this page.
